ANZIC is looking for vibrant and passionate individuals to join the renowned ANZIC Science Committee. If you have a keen interest in international and interdisciplinary research, a love for collaboration, and a desire to help unravel the Earth’s mysteries, this is the opportunity for you!

Our Science Committee has oversight of ANZIC’s scientific program, including setting criteria and assessing and ranking applications for expeditions, post-expedition support, legacy projects, training initiatives and workshops.

Being part of the ANZIC science committee has really broadened my own research as it's given me inspiration to apply my skillset to data and sample sets from past expeditions, which I never would have thought of!

Joining the Science Committee has been great for learning more about the ins and outs of ANZIC and IODP processes, introduced me to a passionate and welcoming community in science drilling, and has let me to advocate for early career perspectives.

I found it immensely satisfying to work along with the ANZIC team to create opportunities, and support students and researchers in the scientific drilling community to reach their goals. I also learnt useful leadership skills and developed relationships that made a positive impact on my career.

Joining the ANZIC science committee has significantly extended my network. It is an exciting opportunity to contribute to building new ties and directions for future projects in the wider scientific drilling community.

The Science Committee: scientific oversight

As a member of the Science Committee you will:

evaluate and rank potential ANZIC participants in scientific drilling projects in accordance with program policies and guidelines
refine criteria for ANZIC’s post-drilling and legacy project support, and review and rank applications to ensure appropriate funding for these projects
set criteria, evaluate, and rank applications for additional scientific funding opportunities provided by ANZIC (e.g. for workshop travel or training).
ensure effective scientific governance of ANZIC by participating in quarterly Science Committee meetings, yearly forums and by joining an ANZIC science sub-committee.

How to apply

Application is via the SmartyGrants portal. You will need:

Expression of Interest, maximum one page, covering:

- your motivation

- your experience, including any previous committee experience

- research field of expertise and alignment with ANZIC priorities.

Curriculum Vitae, maximum two pages, including:

- academic/professional qualifications

- employment history

- selected recent publications or relevant government/industry reports or outputs

- recent synergistic activities (eg. service, committee, reviewer)

- relevant field experience (last 5 years)

Timing

Applications are open from September 19 until October 21. Outcomes are expected to be announced in December 2024.

Selection Process

ANZIC’s Science Committee will assess applications based on motivation, experience, diversity, and alignment with research themes.
