NEW Proposals

Have you got a critical science question that can only be answered by scientific drilling?

Or an idea for a large-scale, multi-discipline legacy project?

ANZIC supports scientists from member institutes to submit proposals to ICDP and IODP for their consideration.

We also support travel to international proposal planning workshops.

Open calls for new drilling proposals

Ocean drilling proposals

IODP3 are looking for ocean drilling proposals containing hypothesis-driven science and addressing the IODP 2050 Science Framework.  They can target any offshore environment, using the flexibility of the Mission Specific Platform approach.

Proposals frequently involve collaborations between international researchers from the multiple geoscience disciplines.

Proposals may be submitted via the IODP3 Gateway at any time, but are evaluated after two deadlines each year: 31 January and 1 July.

There are detailed drilling proposal guidelines to help you craft your idea.

Continental & Land-to-Sea drilling proposals

ICDP invites the submission of Preliminary Proposals, Workshop Proposals and Full Proposals in which drilling is required to achieve critical research goals. (Learn more about the ICDP Proposal Types.)

ICDP also invites proposals in which coordinated drilling on land and at sea is required. These Land-to-Sea proposals are to be submitted first as Preliminary Proposals to ICDP and will be jointly assessed with IODP review panels.

ICDP’s scientific focus is on Geodynamic Processes, Geohazards, Georesources, and Environmental Change, as outlined in their Science Plan.

Submissions due 15 January 2025.

Open calls for new legacy projects

Scientific Projects using Ocean Drilling Archives (SPARCs) are large-scale research projects which use legacy assets (core, samples and data) collected previously by ocean drilling.

SPARCs can address any aspect of the IODP 2050 Science Framework  and should adopt innovative, creative, and multidisciplinary approaches to, for example, the production of large new datasets, integration of data across multiple expeditions, and/or the application of new methods or technologies not available when the legacy assets were collected.

Detailed guidelines for SPARC proposals are now available.

There is an annual submission deadline of 31 January.

Support for proposal planning

We know that converting a scientific drilling idea into a viable drilling plan is a long and complex process. Contact us for support in developing your idea and proposal, or finding international collaborators.

We also offer Travel Support to assist scientists from our member institutions to attend international Proposal Planning Workshops and help shape new scientific drilling plans.
